Metal deck can be used for a variety of applications. Two of the most common types of metal deck are roof deck and floor deck. When ordering metal deck for a project, it is essential to understand the differences in roof deck vs. floor deck.
Our metal decking guide will help you discover which kind of deck you need.
Roof Deck
Metal roof deck is widely used in commercial and industrial construction projects. It creates a strong base that roofing systems can be built upon.
Roof deck works for a variety of structure types, including pitched, flat and arched roofs. It is strong yet lightweight, easy to install, and very economical.
At CSM, we stock and manufacture 4 types of metal roof deck: B Deck, F Deck, N Deck, and 1″ Roof Deck.
B Deck
B Deck is the most common structural roof deck. It is also our top-selling metal deck. Typically B Decking is the ideal solution for short to medium span applications in roof, canopies, and awning construction.
CSM Metal Deck stocks and manufactures B, BI, BV, and BIV types of roof deck in 22, 20, 18, and 16 gauge. Our B Deck supports construction spans from 1 foot to 11 feet in distance, depending upon the gauge and back-span condition.
F Deck
F Deck is an original standard in metal roof decking. F Deck is typically recommended for roof deck repairs or re-roofing projects. It is most cost-effective for small roofs, canopies, or awnings.
CSM Metal Deck stocks and manufactures type F roof deck in 22, 20, 18, and 16 gauge. Our F Deck supports construction spans from 1 foot to 10 feet in distance, depending upon the gauge and back-span condition

Floor Deck
Floor deck is also called composite deck because it is used in conjunction with concrete. When floor deck is laid down, concrete is poured over it to form a strong base structure for construction.
The combination of floor deck and concrete serves the dual purpose of permanent form and positive reinforcement.
At CSM, we manufacture and stock three types of composite floor deck: 1.5″ Composite Deck, 2″ Composite Deck, and 3″ Composite Deck.
1.5″ Composite Floor Deck
1.5″ Composite Metal Deck is durable and easy to install. Typically 1.5″ Composite Deck is used for applications in outdoor flooring.

Roof Deck vs. Floor Deck
It is important to be able to distinguish roof deck from floor deck, because some roof and floor deck panels have the same profile and dimensions. The difference is in embossment patterns.
Floor deck has a special embossment pattern. When concrete is poured on to floor deck, it binds to the embossment, interlocking to form a composite foundation for construction.
Roof deck does not have any embossment. It is completely smooth. Instead of concrete, metal roof deck has other elements of a roofing system built on top of it, like rigid board insulation and built-up roofing.
