At CSM, it is our goal to provide the best selection of metal deck products for our customers. We recently acquired new equipment in our manufacturing facility that will allow us to produce vented metal deck. Because it is not a commonly used product, we wanted to provide you with some information on vented metal deck and its applications in commercial construction.
What Is Vented Metal Deck?
According to the Steel Deck Institute, vented metal deck is used to increase the drying time of lightweight concrete systems. The vents are small slits created during manufacturing in the pan of the deck – typically 1/16″ – 1/8″ wide and consisting of 1 – 1.5% net open area. This venting allows for the excess concrete mix water to drain from the slurry component of lightweight insulating concrete (LWIC) systems. Additionally, the venting allows for reduced vapor pressure when the LWIC is covered with an impermeable roofing membrane.
Vented metal deck is an add-on for other types of metal deck, like roof deck, composite deck, or form deck.
When Should Vented Deck Be Used?
While vented deck is not commonly used in today’s construction projects, there are still instances in which it may be used. Typically it is used for metal roof deck systems when exposed structural concrete is being poured over the system.
Unfortunately, we often see vented metal deck being used for projects that do not actually need it. To ensure that you are using the right type of metal deck for your project, you need to find a metal deck manufacturer that has a high level of knowledge about decking products.
