If you’re not familiar with metal decking, you may not know that there are a variety of roof deck options. Each of these roof deck types offer different support functions for commercial construction. In this article, we will be discussing type B Deck and its applications in structural roofing projects.
What Is Metal Roof Deck?
Metal roof deck is a kind of metal panel that is manufactured to provide structural support for roofing systems. It is just one component of a full roof system.
Typically, metal roof deck is installed directly on top of structural beams, open web joists, or trusses. It spans between the beams, web joists, and trusses to form a strong, permanent platform that the rest of the roof system can be built upon.
The roofing system that is built on top of metal roof deck consists of a dead load and a live load. A dead load is the weight of the roofing materials, like rigid board insulation and built-up roofing that is placed on top of the metal deck. The live load refers to the weight that the roof system will take on during construction as equipment and construction workers move across the roof.
Additionally, metal roof deck creates a horizontal diaphragm shear for the roofing system, which is essential when considering the impact of natural events like wind, storms, and earthquakes.
What Is B Deck?
Metal deck comes in a number of different gauges. These gauges determine the load value of the metal deck. A deeper gauge value can span further and hold more weight than a shallow gauge value. B Deck is by far the most common metal roof deck.
B Deck is a smooth, non-composite structural metal roof deck panel. It comes in a variety of gauges, which can support rigid board insulation and built-up roofing loads.
Typically it is used for applications on flat roof systems, like Thermoplastic Polyolefin (TPO), built-up roofing, ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM), and more.
