Metal roof deck provides a structural substrate for roof deck applications. The metal roof deck is installed directly over steel to serve as a solid surface for weatherproofing, insulation, and other roofing materials. This keeps the metal roof deck safe from natural elements like wind or rain and ensures that the structure is safe and sturdy.
Metal roof deck is widely used in commercial and industrial construction projects because it is strong, lightweight, and economical. Roof deck works for most structures, including pitched, flat, and arched roofs. Because of its versatility, metal roof deck can be either left exposed and work as an open ceiling design, or it may be painted to create a more polished and finished look.
At CSM Metal Deck, we offer a variety of metal roof deck types:
- B Deck
- N Deck
- 1″ Deck
In this article, we’ll explain the main differences and characteristics of the different metal roof deck types.
Types of Roof Deck
All types of metal roof deck can be created in a variety of depths, widths, and gauges depending on the needs of the construction project. The most common types of roof deck are B Deck, N Deck, and 1″ Roof Deck.
B Deck
B Deck, which is also referred to as BW-36, Wide Rib, 1.5B, BI, BV, or BIV, is a wide rib, 1.5″ deep metal deck. B Deck is a smooth, non-composite structural metal roof deck panel that comes in various gauges, which can support rigid board insulation and built-up roofing loads.
The top features of B Deck include being lightweight and easy to install making it an economical choice for many construction projects. B Deck is also the most modern and most common type of metal roof decking. Typically, B Decking is the ideal solution for short to medium-span applications in roof, canopies, and awning construction.
B Deck is often used for applications on flat roof systems, like Thermoplastic Polyolefin (TPO), built-up roofing, ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM), and more.
CSM Metal Deck stocks and manufactures B, BI, BV, and BIV types of roof deck in 22, 20, 18, and 16 gauge. Our B Deck line supports construction spans from 1 foot to 11 feet in distance, depending upon the gauge and back-span condition (single, double, triple). We also provide a number of B Deck attachments and accessories for installation and construction applications.
N Deck
N Deck (also called Deep Rib and 3N) is a long-span, 3″ deep roof deck widely used when roof steel is spaced farther apart. N Deck is known as Deep Rib because its rib profile that allows this type of roof deck to span longer distances between roofing supports.
The top features of N Deck include being a lightweight and easy-to-install choice for commercial and industrial construction projects. Typically, N Decking is used for applications in roof, canopies, and awning construction when you have supports that are far apart.
The N-Deck supports construction spans from 1 foot to 20 feet or more in distance, varying upon the gauge and back-span condition that could be single, double or triple.
At CSM Metal Deck, we recently installed new manufacturing equipment that allows us to produce 3″ N-Deck in 22, 20, 18, and 16 gauge, and 32″ wide.
1″ Deck
1″ Roof Deck is the ideal solution for short to medium-span applications in roof, canopies, and awning construction. The top features of 1″ Deck include sturdiness and reliability while being very easy to install.
CSM Metal Deck stocks and manufactures 1.0RD and 1.0RDV in 26, 24, 22, and 20 gauge. Our 1″ Roof Deck line supports construction spans from 1 foot to 11 feet in distance, depending upon the gauge and back-span condition.
