Metal roof deck is widely used in commercial and industrial construction projects as a foundation for roofing systems. Sometimes, the underside of the metal deck is not enclosed in the rest of the roofing system and is left exposed. To make this exposed deck appear more polished, contractors can use painted roof deck instead of the standard unfinished metal roof deck.
Why Should I Use Painted Deck?
While it is possible to paint galvanized roof deck on your own, it is a very time-consuming process. Galvanized roof deck is typically coated with a layer of oil to prevent rust. To paint galvanized roof deck, you have to strip off the oils, rinse and dry the deck, remove any impurities, etch the metal to help the paint adhere, apply primer, and then paint the deck.
If you choose to paint galvanized deck without following all of these steps, your paint will likely chip and peel off soon after application.
On the other hand, pre-painted deck is roughly the same cost as galvanized steel and is delivered to contractors fully finished. It can save you time and money that you would have spent performing the painting process yourself.
When Should I Use Painted Deck?
Painted roof deck is best used for indoor applications. A common example is a large warehouse or retail space, like a hardware store or grocery store.
Painted metal deck should not be used for outdoor applications, such as awnings. If the unpainted metal deck is exposed to elements like wind, rain, and dust, it can rust along the edges where it was cut and has nothing protecting it.
Painted deck is typically white or gray. If you are looking for a neutral color that will blend in, pre-painted deck can be a great solution.
