Learning how to fasten a metal deck structure is not an easy task. The whole process can be very intricate, especially for someone that’s not an expert. From properly landing the deck in place, spreading it, fastening it, to attaching the side laps and installing the metal, it’s a long process.
You must fasten the metal deck to the project’s structural framing, and this can be done with three different methods: welding, power-driven fasteners, or self-drilling screws. We often get asked which is the best method. However, this will vary on the engineer’s specifications.
At CSM Products & Solutions, we have been supplying metal deck throughout the country for over 50 years. Although we do not install, we can guide you on each metal decking fastening technique.
3 Techniques to Fasten Metal Deck
Fastening Metal Deck by Welding
Fastening metal deck by welding is a typical technique. The type of weld used is called a plug weld and must always be fastened by a light gauge certified welder.
The method for welding metal decking to a steel framing structure happens by using a weld rod and a welding machine. The process includes using a weld rod to burn through the metal deck into the steel beam and create a puddle weld approximately the size of a nickel. After this step, you pull the weld rod and repeat.
Fastening Metal Deck with Power Driven Fasteners
Utilizing a power-driven fastener for fastening metal decking is very common for floor and roof metal decking. This attachment method includes using a power-actuated tool and pin.
The power-actuated tool works very similarly to a gun because it has a charge, and when triggered, it pushes the piston. After that step is complete, the piston slams the pin through the metal decking into the steel beam. The size of the pin would vary depending on the decking system being used.
Fastening Metal Deck with Self-Drilling Screws
Self-drilling screws tend to be the most affordable fastening option while also requiring the least amount of skill.
Fastening screws are installed using a torque-controlled drill, which have been created specifically to ensure proper installation without stripping the screw.. The length of the drill point will depend on the thickness of the metal deck panels that need to be connected.
