Steel prices often change, and, unfortunately, in 2021, the U.S. has seen significant steel price increases as steel has become low in supply. This steel shortage has caused a sharp uptick in the price of steel, making the manufacturing process months longer than usual, and, by consequence, increasing the cost of metal deck for many manufacturers who are trying to meet demand.
Galvanized Steel Coil is at historical levels and almost 3x the cost is was last year. While it’s unclear when steel prices will decrease, bank analysts predict that the price of steel will remain higher than usual in the second and third quarters of 2021. Many industry experts do expect the steel prices to decrease, but they may never come back low levels that were seen in the past couple years.

Manufacturing
In addition to the cost of steel, manufacturing processes can affect the cost of metal deck.
Each manufacturer will have different equipment. Certain types of equipment allow manufacturers to produce a higher volume of metal deck more quickly, which can help them keep the cost of metal deck relatively low. Other manufacturers may not have a lot of equipment readily available, and it can take them longer to produce metal deck.
