As suppliers of metal deck for over 50 years, we have a unique understanding of the metal deck manufacturing and shipping process. One question that we are often asked is “how much does metal deck cost?”
Because metal deck can be manufactured in a variety of depths, widths, and gauges to fit the needs of different construction projects, the cost of your order can vary. We’ve put together this guide to help you understand how much metal deck may cost for your project.
Factors In Metal Deck Cost
Cost of Steel
Metal deck is manufactured using Hot Dipped Galvanized Steel Coil. Steel prices often change, and, unfortunately, in 2021, the U.S. has seen significant steel price increases as steel has become low in supply. This steel shortage has caused a sharp uptick in the price of steel, making the manufacturing process months longer than usual, and, by consequence, increasing the cost of metal deck for many manufacturers who are trying to meet demand.
Galvanized Steel Coil is at historical levels and almost 3x the cost is was last year. While it’s unclear when steel prices will decrease, bank analysts predict that the price of steel will remain higher than usual in the second and third quarters of 2021. Many industry experts do expect the steel prices to decrease, but they may never come back low levels that were seen in the past couple years.

In addition to the cost of steel, manufacturing processes can affect the cost of metal deck.
Each manufacturer will have different equipment. Certain types of equipment allow manufacturers to produce a higher volume of metal deck more quickly, which can help them keep the cost of metal deck relatively low. Other manufacturers may not have a lot of equipment readily available, and it can take them longer to produce metal deck. Typically, if the manufacturing process takes longer, the manufacturer will have to charge their customers more money to cover the time and effort put in by their manufacturing team.
At CSM, our manufacturing facility is made up of a large, 16,000 square foot warehouse, additional 5-acre yard space, MetForm Deck Mill, and 15-ton overhead crane, all of which allow us to meet the storage demands of our large supply of metal deck. This allows us to efficiently manufacture metal deck and keep costs lower for our customers.
Another factor in the cost of metal deck is shipping.
Some metal deck manufacturers also ship products directly from their facility, using their own shipping equipment. This can help them save on costs and keep prices low for customers, because they don’t have to pay a third-party shipping service. Manufacturers who do have to rely on third-party shipping services to deliver their products will likely charge more to cover the costs of the shipping service.
CSM is involved in all parts of the manufacturing process, including delivery. We ship metal deck across the United States from our warehouse in Houston, Texas. This allows us to save our customers money on shipping and the overall cost of their order of metal deck.
