At CSM, we’ve been supplying metal deck for over 50 years. One question that we are frequently asked is: how is metal deck made? In this article, we will take you through our metal deck manufacturing process step by step, from the initial order to shipment and delivery.
What Is Metal Deck?
Metal deck is an important element of construction projects. There are different types of metal decking that can be used for flooring, roofing systems, or siding.
At CSM, we manufacture metal roof deck, form deck, and composite deck.
Metal roof deck is widely used in commercial and industrial construction projects and provides a foundation for roofing systems to be built upon. It works for most types of structures, including pitched, flat and arched roofs.
Metal composite deck and form deck are both used for flooring. Composite deck has embossments designed to interlock with concrete slabs, which serves the dual purpose of permanent form and positive reinforcement. Form deck serves as a permanent steel base for poured, reinforced concrete floor slabs.
How Is Metal Deck Made at CSM?
Each type of metal deck can be created in a variety of depths, widths, and gauges depending upon the needs of the construction project. At CSM, we stock metal deck, but we also manufacture deck on demand. Once we receive an order, we can begin manufacturing the metal deck to fit the needs of our customers.
Our Manufcaturing Process
The first step in our manufacturing process is to set our form roll machine for the correct deck profile and gauge. The gauge is set by adjusting the gap between rollers using a Micrometer.
We utilize equipment with rafted technology, which allows different metal deck profiles to be swapped out quickly and easily.
After the metal deck gauge and profile have been set, we load steel coils onto the Uncoiler, which unwinds the coil into a flat sheet for the next machine.
Once the steel coil has gone through the Uncoiler, it is fed through the roll forming machine, so that it can formed into the appropriate type of metal decking.
Once the metal deck has been formed according to the order specifications, the order is entered in the Control Panel.
The metal deck is then run on to the drop stacker.
Lastly, the metal deck is bundled and placed on the delivery truck for shipment.
We ship metal deck nationwide from our facility in Houston, Texas. Once we receive your initial order request, our estimators will submit a quote. They will then choose between stock and production to give you the best price within your deadline. Contact us today to start your order of metal deck.
