At CSM Metal Deck, it is our goal to provide the best products and a high level of expertise for our customers. We are incredibly excited to announce that we have recently become a certified Steel Deck Institute member. This is a significant distinction for metal deck manufacturers, and we are proud to join the list of accomplished members.
About the Steel Deck Insititute
The Steel Deck Institute (SDI), with a legacy spanning nearly a century, has played a pivotal role in setting industry standards for the design, engineering, and manufacturing of steel deck products. SDI’s comprehensive manuals offer invaluable guidance for the design and production of metal roof and floor decks.
SDI is on a mission to champion the numerous advantages of steel deck construction, including its outstanding durability, structural strength, sustainability, economic viability, weather resistance, and aesthetic appeal. We encourage you to visit the SDI website for further insights into the Steel Deck Institute.
A New Energy and Focus at the Steel Deck Institute
“SDI’s mission is to expand the market for steel deck, ensuring it continues to find new applications and remains indispensable in construction,” says Michael Martignetti, the current President of SDI.
Martignetti is driving SDI’s future by blending its rich history and expertise to build credibility for steel deck while looking ahead. Over the past decade, SDI has played a pivotal role in shaping industry standards and their incorporation into building codes, which have been widely adopted by specifying architects and structural engineers nationwide.
A New Era Begins with SDI’s Managing Director
After a remarkable 10-year tenure as the Managing Director of the Steel Deck Institute, Bob Paul is retiring, passing the baton to J. Kenneth Charles, III.
Charles, a seasoned professional with 46 years of experience in the steel industry, brings a wealth of knowledge to his new role.
- Ken Charles envisions growth in new markets, increased education for engineers, and a focus on sustainability.
- Initiatives include exploring new markets for steel deck products, such as replacing wood roof systems on the West Coast, and substituting steel panel wall systems in place of other construction materials.
- SDI will actively promote sustainability, emphasizing that steel deck is environmentally friendly due to its high percentage of recycled materials.
- A rebranding effort is underway to modernize SDI’s image, including a new website and enhanced digital presence.
As SDI evolves under the leadership of Ken Charles, it will continue to build on its rich history, driven by dedicated members and a commitment to innovation and sustainability.
What It Means to Be a Steel Deck Institute Member
There are two levels of SDI membership: members and associate members. Members are metal roof and floor deck manufacturers, while associate members manufacture products that are used in the production of steel deck or its uses in the field.
To become a member, metal deck manufacturers must operate a facility within the United States that produces metal floor and roof deck that can be used to support roofing systems, reinforce floor systems, or serve as a permanent floor base. Additionally, each member must pass a detailed onsite audit to ensure that they are meeting and manufacturing deck according to SDI standards.
