As universities continue expanding to support growing student populations, large-scale campus developments require reliable building materials and coordinated construction timelines. For the new Student Union and Student Success Center at The University of Texas at Dallas, CSM Metal Deck supplied steel deck systems to support a modern facility designed for collaboration, learning, and student engagement.
Background
The University of Texas at Dallas is developing a new Student Union and Student Success Center that will significantly expand campus resources for students. Designed by Perkins + Will, engineered by Datum Engineers, and constructed by SpawGlass, the facility will more than double the capacity of the current Student Union when completed.
The building is designed to bring together academic and student life spaces under one roof. The academic side of the facility will include classrooms, a 400-seat lecture hall, offices for the Office of Undergraduate Education, the Student Success Center, the Hobson Wildenthal Honors College, and the Center for Teaching and Learning.
The Student Union portion will feature extensive engagement spaces, including a ballroom capable of hosting large events, retail dining options, reservable meeting rooms, group study areas, and creative collaboration spaces for student organizations.
Challenge
Large campus construction projects demand materials that support both structural performance and efficient installation. With a facility of this size, maintaining steady progress across multiple phases of construction requires dependable suppliers and durable deck profiles capable of meeting structural requirements.
The UT Dallas Student Center project required steel decking capable of supporting a variety of structural applications while keeping construction timelines on track.
Solution
CSM Metal Deck supplied several steel deck profiles for the project, including:
- 20GA 1.5” B-Deck – Vented, Galvanized
- 20GA 3” N-Deck – Galvanized
- 18GA 3” Form Deck – Galvanized

These deck systems were selected to support different structural requirements throughout the facility while providing the strength and durability needed for a large institutional project.
Project Execution
Projects of this scale require close coordination between manufacturers, contractors, and design teams. By supplying the appropriate deck profiles and ensuring consistent availability of materials, CSM Metal Deck helped support construction progress for the UT Dallas Student Center.

Working alongside the project’s design and construction partners, including Perkins+Will and SPAW Glass, CSM contributed materials that support the structural framework of a facility designed to serve the campus community for decades.
Results

The UT Dallas Student Union and Student Success Center will be a major addition to the university, providing expanded academic resources and new gathering spaces for students. Once completed, the facility will offer significantly expanded student engagement space, including a ballroom capable of hosting large campus events and multiple collaborative learning environments.
By supplying the steel decking systems for this project, CSM Metal Deck played a role in supporting the construction of a landmark campus facility that will enhance the student experience and support the university’s continued growth.
